  • Overview

    The Associate General Counsel impacts the success of Compassion International by serving as an adviser to key professional and management staff, providing targeted counsel and expertise on matters including developments in the law of various countries, managing outside counsel in International countries and providing leadership with legal and non-legal advice in their individual contexts. This position may reside and provide expert legal service in any region of the world. The responsibilities include selection and management of contract service, employee hiring, discipline, and termination, as well as, coaching, performance management, assigning, checking, and approving work to achieve global strategies and objectives. The incumbent collaborates with other managers and leaders and contributes to the development of strategy, making decisions based on operational strategy and priorities.

    Essential Job Functions


    • Maintains a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Is a consistent witness for Jesus Christ, maintains a courteous, Christ-like attitude in dealing with people within and outside of Compassion, and faithfully upholds Compassion’s ministry in prayer.

    • Acts as an advocate for children – raising the awareness of the needs, neglect, nurture, and potential of children in poverty and challenging and enabling those within one’s influence to greater involvement and effectiveness on behalf of children.

    • Provides leadership, planning and consultation in the successful alignment of assigned department resources to ensure achievement of operational priorities and initiatives, integrating priorities within organizational strategies to ensure that department's purpose is fulfilled.

    • Manage, draft, and negotiate a broad array of commercial contracts, including events-based marketing agreements, vendor and service agreements, licensing, technology procurement, non-disclosure agreements, engagement letters, SOWs, and amendments.

    • Provide legal guidance and practical solutions to Compassion’s domestic teams with a high level of professionalism and outstanding commercial business judgment.

    • Collaborate with the legal team and other Compassion departments to identify and implement improvements to the contract management process.

    • Coordinate with other legal team members to maintain and update Compassion’s contract management tool to facilitate contract revisions, approvals, and reporting.

    • Renders legal analysis and guidance on Compassion’s policy and organizational activities, including compliance with the laws of countries where Compassion operates. This includes employment law, collective bargaining (in certain countries), child protection, benefits and state-sponsored severance schemes, tax-exempt status, religious entity status, and best practices for charitable entities.

    • Works collaboratively with U.S. Deputy General Counsel and outside counsel to manage Compassion’s domestic litigation risk and active litigation matters, including evaluating contract disputes and managing outside litigation cases.

    • Serves as a resource for internal functions and external auditors regarding Compassion’s litigation experience, future trends, status of incorporation, domestic risk issues, ethics reporting, child protection investigations, and local law enforcement interaction.

    • Accountable for supporting, upholding, and engaging in Compassion's core "Cultural Behaviors" in all internal and external communication and relationships.


    • Juris Doctor Degree, with strong academic credentials.

    • Currently licensed to practice law in at least one state in the U.S.

    Work Experience

    • 4 years of in-house and/or law firm experience in a transactional practice.
    • Expertise in contracts, events-based marketing transactions, tax and business structures.

    Licenses and Certifications

    • Currently licensed to practice law in at least one country (or eligible to become licensed within 12 months of hire through examination or reciprocity).

    Working Environment: Office – Standard Office Environment

    Physical Demands: Sitting, standing, and/or walking for up to 8 hours per day

    Travel Requirements: May be required to travel up to 25% of normal schedule
