Overview

As part of a collaborative international team, this role contributes to advancing organizational knowledge and programmatic effectiveness. Responsible for carrying out primarily quantitative program effectiveness and research studies to support Compassion's child development programs, leadership decision-making and marketing platforms.

Essential Job Functions

  •  Maintains a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Is a consistent witness for Jesus Christ, maintains a courteous, Christ-like attitude in dealing with people within and outside of Compassion, and faithfully upholds Compassion’s ministry in prayer.
  • Acts as an advocate for children – raising the awareness of the needs, neglect, nurture, and potential of children in poverty and challenging and enabling those within one’s influence to greater involvement and effectiveness on behalf of children.
  • Plans, designs and conducts new quantitative research studies on a variety of topics as assigned, using appropriate and rigorous approaches to generate reliable, timely and meaningful information to stakeholders with the support of the Director of Program Effectiveness and Research (PER) and senior staff. Includes stakeholder engagement, development of research questions, literature reviews and country-level contextualization, sample and participant selection, quantitative methodology development (mostly quasi-experimental methods), in-depth analysis using the necessary data analysis tools (e.g., computer-based text analysis and advanced statistics software), report writing and presentation to multiple audiences and forums.
  • Using causal methods, runs ongoing impact evaluations as part of the Program Effectiveness Research Team’s effort to continually measure the effectiveness of all parts of Compassion’s child development programs. Includes running studies that have previously been developed and taking initiative to suggest and design innovations for methods, questions, and data collection of these studies, as well as possibly generating new, ongoing impact studies.
  • Using experience from field exposure, technical expertise and ongoing self directed learning, advises program managers, field office staff, and leadership on relevant programmatic issues when requested and through contribution to and/or leadership of multi-departmental project, creative thinking and analysis teams.
  • Interfaces with other Compassion departments and individuals who collect information and data (e.g., marketing, auditing and quality assurance, business intelligence, and management) in order to minimize duplication of effort, build cooperation and support the growth of quality information gathering across the organization.
  • Presents research findings to audiences small and large in a consumable way to engage non-research staff in research results. Works with Program Effectiveness Research Reporting Specialist to best present research results to different audiences as appropriate.

 

Qualifications

F U N C T I O N A L   J O B   C O M P E T E N C I E S

  • Advanced training and experience in current and state-of-the-art data collection methods and quantitative research designs (including experimental and quasi-experimental methodologies that require counterfactuals), ideally from a variety of development fields, including hands-on experience in developing country contexts.

  • Demonstrated experience in effectively training data collectors in local international contexts.

J O B   Q U A L I F I C A T I O N S

  • Has a personal relationship with Jesus Christ
  • Education: Master's degree in economics, econometrics, applied psychology, international economics, international development or equivalent, with major components that include research methods, at least two semesters of econometrics or advanced statistics, and impact evaluations.
  • Experience: two years recent hands-on research experience, including at least one year applied experience in conducting rigorous quasi-experimental or experimental methods and/or in cross-cultural settings that include child and/or community development, public health, or similar. Demonstrated experience in establishing strong working cross-functional and multi-cultural relationships and constantly advocate for high-quality research in international field countries. Experience presenting research findings to small and large groups of non-researchers.
  • Certifications/Licensing: N/A
  • Other Required Skills: Proficiency in MS Office, databases, STATA (or other statistical programs and willingness to learn STATA), and literature review.   Excellent and creative communication skills, both written and verbal in English, as well as, ideally, in at least one of the languages spoken in Compassion field countries.

  • Working Environment: Standard or home office. Location negotiable.
  • Physical Demands: International travel to remote environments with potentially hazardous and challenging conditions.
